City of Bellevue
Land Cover Classification Project

In conjuction with Space Imaging (SI) MARSHALL created land cover classifications using four-band multispectral imagery for the City of Bellevue Land Cover Classification Project.

The images below show the same area with different color band combinations.

The first image is a 1/2 meter spatial resolution true color image of the Shoreline of Lake Washington in the City of Bellevue. It was acquired in late August 1999. The recent Endangered Species Act (ESA) lisiting of several species of West Coast Salmonids has made this a high priority area to the City of Bellevue because it contains critical salmon habitat. This area also contains sensitive wetlands.

The second image is a false color image of the same shoreline. The vegetation appears red because the near infrared band is displayed instead of the red band. This band is useful for the categorization of different vegetation types.

The third image is a binary classification of vegetation vs. nonvegetation land cover.

SI provided the airborne multispectral imagery in the urban area using their Digital Airborne Imagery System (DAIS). MARSHALL processed and analyzed the data to create land cover classification products including:

Impervious surfaces
Well-watered lawns
Tree cover
Wetlands

MARSHALL performed extensive accuracy assessment and advanced analyses using ArcInfo and ERDAS IMAGINE. This process saved the City thousands of hours of digitizing and aerial photo interpretation. One of the main purposes of this project was to give City planners land cover information that can be used to establish appropriate zoning.
